The Best WordPress Speed Optimization Plugins & Tools
Updated October 15, 2026
No single plugin is best for every site. The right choice depends on your hosting, your theme and how much time you want to spend configuring. These are widely used options, grouped by what they do. Check each product’s current features and pricing before you decide.
Caching and optimization
- WP Rocket: paid, simple to set up, covers caching, file optimization and lazy loading.
- LiteSpeed Cache: free, and most powerful on hosting that runs a LiteSpeed server.
- W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache: free caching plugins with different levels of control.
- FlyingPress: paid, focused on performance-oriented optimization features.
Use only one caching plugin. Running two at the same time causes conflicts and often makes the site slower.
Image optimization
- ShortPixel, Imagify, EWWW Image Optimizer and Smush: compress images and can convert them to WebP or AVIF.
Database cleanup
- WP-Optimize: removes revisions, expired transients and other clutter. See the database guide.
Controlling scripts and styles
- Perfmatters and Asset CleanUp: let you turn off scripts and styles on pages where they are not needed.
CDN
- Cloudflare: has a free plan, set up at the DNS level.
- Bunny.net: a pay-as-you-go CDN.
Measurement tools
- PageSpeed Insights: lab results plus real-user Core Web Vitals data.
- Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools: run tests locally and inspect each request.
- WebPageTest: detailed waterfalls from different locations and devices.
- GTmetrix: reports and history of your tests.
- Query Monitor: shows slow database queries and which plugin runs them.
- Google Search Console: the Core Web Vitals report groups your pages by real-user results.
How to choose and use them
- Ask your host what caching it already provides. Do not duplicate it.
- Test your site first, so you have a before result.
- Change one setting at a time and check that forms, menus and checkout still work.
- Re-test after each change, and undo anything that does not help.
- Fewer plugins are better. Each one you add must earn its place.
